Located a 45 minute drive northwest of Sapporo, Otaru is a small port city revived as a tourist town; it is home to the Otaru Canal, adorned with cobbled streets and Victorian-style street lamps. Also reminiscent of Europe is the Otaru Zenibako Brewery located along the canal, a Bavarian beer hall complete with bratwurst and weizenbiers.
Touring the canal will not take all day, but the surrounding area is teaming with food stalls, restaurants, shops, and museums. It is a good opportunity to try specialty Hokkaido dishes such as zangi chicken, miso ramen, and jingisukan. Otaru is also home to several glass-blowing workshops, and a nighttime show from one of the many artisans is a dazzling sight to see.
For the more adventurous, there is the Otaru Tenhuyama Ropeway which takes you high above the city before connection to the eponymous ski resort.
